So geometry where it's necessary and bump and displacement maps where it's not?
That was my thinking and you still can make it as high poly as you think is needed but then you can use the texture maps to actually offer not only more detailed look but perhaps also different look options from lets say a clean looking cubic to one perhaps in an abandoned office building so a user can use it in several different types of scenes.
