Subject: Super Hero search

quietrob ( ) posted Fri, 19 June 2015 at 11:02 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 5:14 AM

I'm looking for the new version of the Superman outfit (Supes himself if a "version" of him is available.).  Really I'd like to find the big 3 from of the New 52 from the DC universe.  Are there any look a likes out there?

EClark1894 ( ) posted Fri, 19 June 2015 at 11:52 PM

This doesn't necessarily help your search, but just so you know, you could always just re-texture a model of the old suit.

Thanks, ECl  I thought this would be an easy one as so many like our super-heroes but I think that may be my fate.  At least I won't have to do those outside red undies anymore!

You could see if Doug Sturk is still creating the superhero suits.  He's still got his web page, I believe.

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 20 June 2015 at 4:04 AM

I made that costume for Tyler. Who do you want to use it on if you can get the suit? I don't have any Daz figures, so if it's an M-something, I won't be able to help. It's rigged for Tyler and weightmapped. Once I get a WIFI connection I'll post a render of it.

Sharecg is where you will find Wonder Woman and Superman costumes.  Note the avatar and the gallery link below:

Rokket, which suit do you have?  I do have Tyler and I think using other figures always makes for a nice difference.  Superman should be a little different.  More powerful than the others.  Please let me know when you post to your gallery or to this thread.

I was shocked (embarrassed) that so many heroes of the DCU were available at ShareCG and I didn't think to look there.  I just put a watch on Doug Sturk.  WOW!

Please let me now of any more Super outfits or Power outfits or even one of those some guy dressed as a bat.

Thank you, Hborre, Rokket (welcome back) and EClark (of EC comics? No!) I appreciate your help.

I just checked.  It was censored almost into nonexistence a few years before I was born.  Whew!  I'm not older than EC Comics.  Yay!

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 20 June 2015 at 10:44 PM

@quietrob: I made the Man of Steel suit for Tyler. I hadn't done anything with it, but I think I may have posted a thread about it when I did it. I made it right after the movie came out. I just dug it out of the closet and dusted it off. I need to do a lot of work on it before I can put it out.

The costumes at Sharecg would probably be a better option right now. I have so much on my plate with the new figure I am working on that I don't know if I will get around to fixing it. The piping, chest emblem and the sleeves are all modeled into the suit instead of being just textures and bump maps, so there are issues with warping when I bend the suit when posing it. I need to fix the edge flow in a couple areas.

If I get a chance to work on it, I'll put it in the freebies here so everyone can get it.

Rokket I read your like tomorrow's headlines.  I like to gather stuff up way before the story is ready but I keep making the stories and doing test art for it so I can wait a bit.  The heros of the story have a lot to do before they meet Earth's Greatest Hero's.  The offerings at ShareCG will do nicely for those tests.  But you are known, Rokket.  For Quality.  I like quality.  Send me a PM if you wish to see my heros.

rokket ( ) posted Sun, 21 June 2015 at 12:01 AM

Hmmm. I never figured I'd garner a rep, but thank you for that. I'll see if I will be able to post those renders in a day or so. I am on my work pc right now and as I said before, I can't do much on it.

I will send you a PM. I'm curious now. I have a few of my own characters that I have been designing and redesigning over the last couple of years. I may post those too.

rokket ( ) posted Sun, 21 June 2015 at 4:58 AM

Oh, and by the way... I used Tyler because of the fact that he is weight mapped, and has some really good morphs available to make him a good body for the Man Of Steel. I haven't messed with his face yet, but it's also loaded with morphs, so it may be possible to create a look close enough to pass him off as Clark Kent/Superman.

I will be able to post a render in a couple days, when I get in port.

I decided I was going to start from scratch with the MOS costume. I realized I had way too many issues with the mesh when I started getting into it. I am hopeful that I will be able to get on a WIFI signal later today (it's Monday morning here in Japan) and can post a render of another DC hero you may be interested in. I will also post a quick render of the start of the new suit. If I can get on WIFI, that is...

quietrob ( ) posted Sun, 21 June 2015 at 6:06 PM

@ rokket and those who care to comment as we diverge.  One thing about the man of steel.  He's had many modern iterations.  This is followed in comics.  Curt Swan, Jim Lee, Ed Mcgeniss, Frank Quietly all draw the same hero and he looks different yet is recognized as the same person.  Henry Cavill did a remarkable job as did the director.  As long as he has that iron jaw and dark hair I have no doubt he'll be accepted as Superman. Thanks again for the kind comments regarding my comic!

rokket ( ) posted Sun, 21 June 2015 at 7:33 PM

I think you will approve of my approach. I am going to post a mostly completed costume of another character that I am very happy with. I am going to use the same technique to create the MOS constume.

The figure may still have to be Tyler, but I believe there are face morphs out there so that you can use him as multiple characters in a scene and not be able to tell...

rokket ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 8:24 AM

 That suit looks pretty good.

I restarted mine. I had the neckline wrong.

@EClark: I agree, but then again, the suit we are used to had gone through a dozen or so changes before it got to that point. The original was designed after a circus strongman's costume, which is why he had the red undies on the outside...

EClark1894 ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 10:36 AM · edited Tue, 23 June 2015 at 10:38 AM

True, but that doesn't mean you should just throw it out. Plus, my biggest problem with the current suit is that it's too Kryptonian looking. Although to be fair, if you looked at old comics, you could say the say thing about his old suit.

You know, I did a bodysuit for both Rex and Roxie that could easily be a supersuit.

nabob21 ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 1:45 PM

Temnik,

That looks fantastic. Is that for M4? Are you going to make that available?

rokket ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 7:34 PM

 @EClark:

Most of the body suits out there can be converted. I save all the base suits I make for my own use so I don't have to remodel every time I want to create one of these. The original MOS suit I made looked good in a T pose, but once you start posing.... that is the whole reason I started from scratch. I can bang out a complete body suit in a matter of hours if I can work uninterupted. On this one, though, I am taking it slow because I want the details to be as close to what Temnik posted, but I will do the Kryptonian embossment so it matches the movie suit.

I personally prefer the MOS to the New 52, which is more like armor than a bodysuit. But I prefer Christopher Reeves' suit to all of them. And I like the Linda Carter WW suit over the Amazon warrior thing they are doing with her now.

And I just saw an article that said they are changing her costume again...

EClark1894 ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 8:46 PM

The one I saw from the movie looks too much like Xena. That's another reason, I'm not big on the Warrior Amazon. It acrtually looks like Wonder Woman is copying Xena.

rokket ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 8:59 PM

Yeah... I am not overly impressed with the movie costume, nor the choice of actress, but it might work.

And the article I was referring to about changing her costume is happening in the comics.

file_bf8229696f7a3bb4700cfddef19fa23f.pn I have quite a few adjustments to make. I just remembered why I abandoned this suit in the first place: Tyler's torso is longer than most. I had to cheat a bit to get this to look right, and I still missed the mark with the belt. I am far from finished with it, but it is coming along... These textures are just so that you can see the details. The coloring will be a lot closer to the real thing once I get that far along.

quietrob ( ) posted Fri, 26 June 2015 at 12:04 PM

That is exactly what I'm looking for.  Wonder Woman's outfit changes from time to time but Superman's is actually iconic.  When they did the movie the producer did want the red undies on the outside but couldn't (he said) figure out how to really make it work.  In 2015, it does seem to work better though as a purist, I miss the original outfit including the iconic symbol on the cape.  Nice job Rokket.  Nice job Temnik!  There is an outfit here on Rendo that will work well for Wonder Woman while NOT copying her own bustier and panties and boots.  Batman can have a slightly different look.  I still remember when the biggest change in his outfit was removing the yellow background completely.  It caused an uproar back in the day.  The whole idea is my hero's meeting the guardians of the earth.

Colorful outfits can work in the movies though every movie producer seems to want to put his own touch on the uniform as well as change the story of how they hero came to be.  Does anyone here remember Doctor Donald Blake?  Still, those same colorful outfits work very well in a comic format.

rokket ( ) posted Fri, 26 June 2015 at 4:35 PM

Ok. I will rework the Batman suit cape and upload it a couple days. There is still quite a bit of work to do on the Superman outfit. Both are for Tyler, but if you aren't going to have Bruce Wayne, it might work. To use him as Superman, you will probably have to morph his face anyhow.

Let me know what you want.

I have 99% of the modeling for the suit done. I am still debating redoing the emblem on this chest. I am going to start the boots in a couple days. I have to get back into Blender and continue learning it. I thought about doing the retopology for my Asian girl in Wings, but I am not sure if I really want to do it there.

"Does anyone here remember Doctor Donald Blake?"

@ hborre.  Now that can't be.  I just watched the movie.  Again.  No Don Blake, crippled with a cane.  Jane Foster was a nurse and I'm not sure I remember Baldur even being in there.  I just wish the powers that be wouldn't change the legend so much.  It reminds of me of the Fountainhead when they wanted to change his designs.

#rokket the great.  You have the Mesh look down.  (That is a good change.  His suit has needed an upgrade for sometime though the red shorts on the outside was almost as iconic as "the S")  While the movie made the entire suit darker, in the comics it is lighter.  As I said, Bright colors do work in Print Comics.  I'm not sure Wolverine would look the same in the movies if he was wearing his bumble bee spandex.  This is great work!

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 27 June 2015 at 2:13 AM

I will retexture the emblem because I was not really happy with it. I used just a normal red color. I will darken it and tweak the bump maps and see what happens. Post again in a few hours. I am trying to rest my brain before I start on the boots. I keep putting off opening Blender to start the retopo. I still have to practice with it more because I can get things done, just not so fast.

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 27 June 2015 at 2:19 AM

In the movie they were going for a subdued hue, so a lot of the color actually looks washed out. It worked, though.

I am with you guys, though. I liked the emblem on the cape. Maybe I'll put it on there when it's done. What do you think?

file_4c56ff4ce4aaf9573aa5dff913df997a.pn Aww, crapity! The suit bends waaay better than the old one I made, but the emblem looks like a Dr. Seuss illustration now. It's a separately modeled part, maybe I can smart prop it or something?

The emblem should be wider across the chest.  As a separate prop, it needs to be more rigid, not conforming to the body.

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 27 June 2015 at 8:00 AM · edited Sat, 27 June 2015 at 8:02 AM

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I think maybe it did that because of the cloth sim. I am going to rig it and see what it does. If it's still doing that, I am going to remodel it and smart prop it.

I am about to go to bed. It's Saturday night, 10pm here. I will work on rigging the costume tomorrow, and see what I can come up with. I took a look at that New 52 suit that was on ShareCG, and the emblem is a separate piece that doesn't conform with the rest of the suit. I will probably go that route.
