Subject: Could I get some help?

file_65b9eea6e1cc6bb9f0cd2a47751a186f.jpI have been user Poser since version 4.However I have never learned to make a prop from Poser Primitives. I have four poser primitives that I have put together as a prop and I want the different primitives to be separate items for materials.

  1. How do I bring all these items together as one prop but not making one whole obj. I want separate parts for the materials.

  2. Do I need to UV map this item for separate materials? If so how do I create a UV map?

I am not very good at reading lots of tutorials. A simple step by step would be appreciated. Cheers

Ok.

File/export: wavefront object/ single frame. Click the universe box, all objects will then be deselected in the heirarchy. Click each box corresponding to each primitive that comprises your prop so that each has an x, you want only those objects with an x. Click ok. Make sure all options are unchecked except for 'include existing groups in polygon groups'. Click ok. Name your object and save to wherever is convenient.

Delete or hide your original objects. File/ Import: Wavefront Object, uncheck all options. Find your file, click Open. Your prop is now one object with 3 groups named according to their comprising primitives, accessible and editable via the grouping tool. It also has a single material per comprising group named preview:1, preview:2, etc.

Do you have wings3d?

You don't need to uv map if you just want separate materials, only if you want to have image file based textures that behave according to your specifications. Poser props are already uv mapped (sorta ;)). You can apply a patterned image map, like a grid pattern, to the box primitive for example and it will look like a box with grid lines.

Edit_ looking again at your construction I see that it is made of 4 primitives, so you'll have 4 groups and 4 materials (I said 3 earlier).

Another method;

Go to window, heirarchy editor. Open the hierarchy editor. In the listing drag and drop each little ball icon corresponding to a prop/part onto a single part of the prop. Each will be parented to that single part as children (you can also create more complex parent/children/grandchildren etc hierarchies). Now your construction is still comprised of it's separate parts/groups, has 4 materials. It must be manipulated from the parent part in the workspace however, otherwise it will pull apart.

In the very simplest sense, using this method of parenting and establishing a hierarchy with multiple groups, you will have created the beginnings of a rudimentary figure. It just doesn't have any bones to hold it together.

If you wish to save your new prop, with method 1 save to prop libraries as normal. With the parenting method, use the select subset option. Choosing your parts. It will load with the parent child relations intact.

Hmmm, couldn't seem to figure out how I was wanting to spell hierarchy in the above posts.

Hope I helped, arrow1.

when you export an obj, the file will contain the material names, look for lines usemtl xxxxxxx    where xxxx is the material name. you can rename these in the obj file, save it and import to poser with the new material names.

if you parent the prop you can use the heirarchy editor to create it as a figure. You may need to clean up the pivot points (centers) depending on how it bends.

What Markschum said, you can also rename your groups in such a fashion by finding the 'g' blocks of text, located directly above the usemtl lines.

If you've saved your prop to the library, common practice is to strip out the embedded .obj and insert a file path reference to an .obj in your Geometries folder. This is easy to do in a text editor but there are some utilities to automate the process. Here's a classic free one_
