I never used to roleplay in Secondlife. I just used to go around with a rather plain but sensible Gothic avatar. But what I liked about the place was that you could build your stuff live in-game and play around with it, and I absolutely loved just going around solo and exploring the sims and worlds people made - so it's not like you have to hang with anyone or join clubs if you don't want to - I never did. But I got quite addicted to it at the time and to be honest I can't remember why I drifted from using it. You're right about the adult side of it though, there's plenty of that. I never got involved in it, but it was fun to look-on in secret (make myself invisible) and see what others were up to (especially in the darker Gothic areas of Secondlife). I suppose I was the Secondlife equivalent of a Peeping Tom :-P
