You're right shane, it wasn't a critical comment of the previous topic tone. Obviously anything by Alan Moore or Frank Miller is filled with that and similar aesthetic would have been easily applied to the superhero topic. I was just making an off the cuff generalization, like wouldn't it be neat if the topic were 'read a Lovecraft or Barker or King (insert genre author) story, create a custom antagonist or subject, and render a scene inspired by' type of topic. which I suppose isn't too far off from the previous theme. Anyway, thanks for looking into that.
Redphantom, yeah it's traditionally been a small pool for the render challenge. I remember we were in one together for a Dungeons and Dragons theme. They did away with the challenge for a while, didn't they?
