You can use the parameter dials to fit, though you'll end up having to move the cameras a bit to view as you do it. The last object stays highlighted until you pick something else which in turn highlights. You can simply move your mouse somewhere else off of the prop/hair onto one of the non preview area of the screen if it drives you bonkers.

I do use the dials but when the object is selected it stays selected with all that red selection line mess and you can't really see what the heck is going on even when zoomed in tight on the object. You have to click away to shut the lines off. Really slows things down.
