Subject: Creating an Action

3dsolo ( ) posted Mon, 04 January 2016 at 9:34 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 5:09 PM

Hello, I have PSD files that contain dozens of screen captured images in each one. Is there a way where I can create an ACTION that will:

  1. flatten the PSD
  2. Save the file as a JPG #1
  3. unflatten
  4. chose the next layer and flatten 6 save the new as image #2
  5. repeat this for the next 9 layers. Leaving me with 10 individual JEPGs

thanks

Hello 3dsolo

I am not sure if what you are attempting will work as an action all I can give you is the steps on how actions are created. I do not see that it wouldn't be possible but you would have to go thru all the steps in recording one and seeing if it will work https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/creating-actions.html

Hi, Yes, you can create the action you are talking about. You'll have to run through the entire recording once on all the images with unique file names. And you would have to ensure the directory you choose is empty of the previous batch each time. It would take awhile to get it right, but yes, can be done. You could set it up to do a thousand images if you really wanted. The record actions is found in on the pallet menu. You could also check on deviant, someone might have already made that action, but then again, even the smallest deviation from the original and it goes all wonky, so, best to make your own.

(on a side note: I made a quick action to test it, and it did work)

Thanks for sharing Robert I wasn't to sure if it could be done have only ever created one action myself back in CS 3 and then it wouldnt work in CS 5 never redone it since the action became obsolete for the purpose I created it for in the first place.

You are correct, in the earlier versions of CS there were commands (like 'save') that you couldn't use in an action. In CC 2015.0.0 the save is working in actions. I upgraded to CC 2015.0.1, but oh was that a nightmare... hated it and rolled it back. (the darn paintbucket tool was missing). Why would they take away the paintbucket, it's one of my most used tools.

You can try and use the Export Layer to Files option built into PS located under the File menu. You get a dialog box that will let you choose if you want just the visible layers only, choose the file type/format and where you want to put them. It is a whole lot easier than creating and running an action a bunch of times.

I regularly create actions and batch process them.First click on the create new action symbol at the bottom of the actions palette.I give the action a name and also a function key.Hit record. Then create your action.Crop, re size, enhance etc and flatten image or whatever action you want to create. When finished hit stop recording and save your action. If I have lots of images I want to enhance crop etc all the same I put them into a folder.I then go to File Automate and Batch if I have saved as a set I go the set action in default actions, then to Action and select the action I want.Go to source,Folder or if you have your images open on the screen then go to folder where you have saved your files for processing and click the action. All your images will be saved and enhanced. Hope this might help.I had to process over a 150 images from a yacht Race recently.I was lucky as the all the lighting and exposures were the same so I made an action. It saved me many hours of work.Cheers
