I can't seem to find it, but Chris Creek did an interview at Hivewire last Summer where I recall him saying that DAZ did purchase Carrara and Hexagon to keep e-Frontier (who then owned Poser) from acquiring them. Of course DAZ did continue to develop Cararra until recently. (edit; to clarify, they may still be, but I've been waiting a long time to upgrade from Carrara 8.5 to 9...)
He also said that they at DAZ were truly frightened at the time by Content Paradise; old-timers will recall that one could buy most, if not all, of RDNA's and R'osity's catalogues there until SM took over and deemphasized CP in 2008...
I very much wish that eFrontier had purchased it as there was always an intended connection between Carrara (RayDream) and Poser that was disrupted when MetaCreations sold off its programs.
It would have made more sense. But what's done is done. As I said above SM haven't exactly been saints either.
I know that people have tried to broker peace between SM and DAZ -- to no avail.
