My suggestion would be to use the Hierarchy window and parent each link to the next; then hit the create new figure button at the bottom. This will make a simple figure and save it in the new figures folder of your default runtime. Then you can load, duplicate and move as required. Alternatively search for PhilC's website and look for AllTiedUp - that tool can be used to build poseable figures from individual parts like chains, ropes etc.
