SuperFly has true volumetric shading, but not particularly sophisticated. That is where you plug in the Volume shading components. There are three primary volumetric effects offered, which can be combined. They are emission (glow), attenuation, and scatter.
As to Anthony's specific questions about closed volumes, overlapping volumes, etc. I am unable to answer or I would. Simply experiment to see what happens and you'll have an answer. I suggest you start with simple shapes, like a cube missing one side, two overlapping cubes, etc.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
