Holidays Around The World - nice idea, and I have a perfect picture for it. But please can you fix the gallery upload! I didn't select a thumbnail - but rather than just asking me to add a thumbnail it gave me a red "Thumbnail required" warning and trashed everything I'd already filled in on the form, reminding me why I stopped using the gallery here.

Anyway, since it's not a contest it's less hassle to post my picture here - so here's it is (first posted in my RDNA gallery along with the words below):

The Hungry Ghost Festival

In many parts of Asia the seventh lunar month (around August/September) is a time of ghosts and spirits, and increased offerings of food, money, gifts, and prayers are made to placate them. Midway through this 'ghost month' is the Hungry Ghost Festival.

The strange, eerie whistling occasionally heard at this season in the jungles, coconut plantations, and fruit orchards is not the wind, but the laboured breathing and famished moaning of a particular type of hungry ghost. Extremely tall and thin, almost skeletal, these creatures are cursed with tiny mouths, utterly incapable of ingesting enough food to satiate their ceaseless hunger.

There is a particular type of sweet made from eggs and sugar that's especially popular during this festival. Teased out into a thin string and rolled into loose bundles, it is one of the few foods that is small enough to fit into the mouths of these ghosts. In certain parts this sweet is left along with the other offerings on specially constructed tables, high in the air...
