If you make the mesh penetrate the figure instead of sitting on top, you'll get the effect you're after. I guess it won't be applicable in every instance but it'd certainly work for a spine piece.
That was my intention. In Blender, there is the shrink wrap utility, when you first apply it, the mesh gets pushed into the mesh. I am hoping this will do the trick. Well, that and a good modeling job.
