It's done with a transparency map. Half your trans map will be white.. the rest gradually going to dark grey up to the point of transparency that you wish.

Thanks I appreciate your help. Now all I need to do is create a thigh high sock texture and I think I'll be good to go. I'm 80% percent of the way to being really happy with creating textures for clothing. I must admit that it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it would be a big pain to do, but I'm enjoying the little bit that I'm able to do.
