Your experience is different from mine. Boss pedals are bomb proof in my experience. I still have my old GE7, which is close to 30 years old and still works well. I sold a couple of others recently, around the same age, still working just fine.
It's arguable that Boss became so popular because, by comparison, other pedals were so badly made. They were the first to use FET switches across the range, first to use a battery compartment that didn't make you open the whole box and first to use a LED status indicator. Much as I liked the sound of some EH units, they were temperamental and, compared to Boss, noisy and flimsy.
My ideal rig would be a combination of digital and analog boxes, with a fully digital switching system. I have close to that with my old GT-5. Can't beat my old Cry Baby for wah, though. The amp sims on the GT-5 aren't up to much, compared to modern versions, but the other stuff is very good. But who needs amp sims when you have a Marshall?
