Can you give a link to that deviantart page? I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "gel". Something like resin models?
Ok, here's a couple links. Beware, though the images here are clothed, the artist's art page is full of nudity. https://rastifan.deviantart.com/art/Busty-Elsa-640896404 https://sensualdigitalart.deviantart.com/art/Aunt-Cass-Second-Thoughts-577374716
Maybe they're not as "glowy" as I thought, maybe my eyes were tricking me last night, I was up late haha. Anyways...
Gel, you know, that "milk glow" look, where the sun or light enters the skin and bounces around. I know SSS is able to pull this off but since I just got off work I haven't had time to really look.
Thanks for any and all help, friends!

Do you use Snarly's EZ skin? That should help a lot with what you're after.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
I wonder if a combination of SSS and Edge Blend would work?

It would be interesting to see if the clay node would get the effect OP wants. New node : lighting : diffuse : clay It needs to be plugged into Alternate_Diffuse, if I remember correctly.

Turn the sss scale down. This was using Sabby's Rochelle tex, which is sort of dark anyway. SSS scale was set to .1 in EZSkin2, skin 1, lighter skin would use a slightly higher setting. You have to be careful or you'll get the blue tint between the toes and fingers.
Used Blackhearted's ProStudio lights (Dutch Masters I believe) with GC off, IDL on and no envsphere FWIW

I do not know exactly what you (the OP) want to obtain, the picture samples (links) show a light shimmer on the skin. I've done some times ago a wax-material, maybe this is the look you want to achive.

This is exactly what I was looking for. What settings did you use?
bevans84, yes turning the scale setting down produces the unwanted blue when skins are close. In my characters that I have in my store, the settings are 2.00000 which are still good but doesn't produce the unwanted blue effect.
If I remember right, Snarly's EZskin is just as difficult as Poser's material room.
The Clay node didn't work, it only makes the skin white. No mater where I put it.

Did you zero out the diffuse value? Skin color/map plugs into clay; clay plugs into alternate diffuse. Diffuse value should be zero.

Did you actually render what you suggested? Cause I'm not getting what I'm expecting from plugging clay in. Here's what I got, I did the exact thing you suggested on the torso.
Helos, your trick worked! But I think Poser or my computer is playing with my head. I have the exact same thing going on with the head as with the body, but it's rendering different??? I don't get it. I looked and compared many times, re-rendered in small areas (spot render) and still getting this funny result. Crap, this is mind bogging! Anyways, I played with the reflection and specular to make her look right.
I guess I'm gonna just play around more with other characters and if it does the same thing, I'll wait till I get a new computer. It's got me stumped. What are your result when you apply this to V4? Can you render and upload to show?
Here's the image...

Ok, Snarly's thing is just as confusing as the material room, but got a question. Does it edit all the skin (face, torso, limbs) at the same time? Where can I get it? I'm interested to roll up my sleeves and learn this thing lol.
As for the SSS settings, yes, the higher the value, the less blue. But in order to get that "glowy", "gel" look, I had to set it to .2 (buttermilk). I'll play with it more later when I can get Snarly's Ezskin. Got a link?

My first suspicion for the grey shadowing is that is the interior parts causing the shadow: inner mouth, nostrils, eye sockets. You could make all of those fully transparent in order to test.

No, I do not think that inner parts are causing the greyish under face. It's IMO a blur effect with the face shadows,
an effect like the soft draw (blur) in the photography. I remember as a student I stretched a nylon stocking over the
objective of my camera and the hard shadows merged to soft.

So has anyone mastered to get a nice "gel" look in characters using SSS? (I'm still stuck with P9 till I can buy an update). I was browsing DeviantArt and ran into someone who's doing a bunch of Disney 3D characters and managed a really good gel look on them. Since this person doesn't respond to comments, I didn't bother asking them, chances are it wouldn't get answered.
I haven't tried playing with the SSS node yet, but figured if someone has a mat file (less the texture load), I can use that and learn it. I think I would like to try rendering some real cartoony 3D render.
