I've done before. Some clothing never works in the cloth room because it's made in pieces that aren't and can't be welded. Many do seem to work using the method you described. For pockets and such, make them soft decorated. There can be some problem with the cloth intersecting itself. Checking the 3 boxes under the Additional Cloth Collisions Option in the Simulation settings dialog help with that. If you still get some, and it shows on the render, use the smooth on the morph brush. That usually fixes it. Also, something to think about. Most clothes load in the T formation. You can pose the arms or legs before converting to the object file.
