Subject: Can't Install New Content

Tomsde ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2018 at 8:02 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 3:53 AM

I just bought a character set for Paul for Poser 11.1 and used the installer in Poser to unzip the files into the Downloads folder. The content would not show up, even though the paths are correct. I tried to install it into an outside folder and importing it with the same result. Now if I import my old Poser Library Folders with content already installed, they function fine, the content is there and it loads fine. I don't know what is going on. I have UAC turned off on my PC so it's not that. I downloaded a free character set from here just to make sure it wasn't the content itself with the same result. What do I do now?

hmmm.. THAT item was perfectly fine in March of this year... I'll double check, but I think the the issue is the Poser 11.1 install.....

I contacted Smith Micro, but they didn't seem to understand my question.

Just to be sure, I always open a zip file in a zip program before installing. just so I know the file structure which sometimes is nested into the vendor's folder before it is in the runtime folder. This is rare, but it happens. Also be sure you've directed it to the runtime you want it in when installing.

First thing to check: go to the downloads folder which is in the poser 11 content folder in explorer and see if the files are anywhere in there. They should of course be in the runtime in downloads. Have you by chance deleted the default downloads folder from poser library and added your old downloads from p10 to the library?. The poser manual says you can't do this, but you can. However it causes a problem. If you install and click on ok to install to the downloads folder it downloads to the default folder which poser no longer displays in the library. You can get around this by using the drop down menu when installing and selecting downloads, which then puts the content into the downloads runtime which shows up in the library.

This is why I no longer use the downloads folder, so for Ace for Paul for example I have created a new library for all my Paul and Pauline stuff.

Do you know how to do this? If not just ask 😄

I appreciate your answers. Initially the zip folder went to the wrong place--I manually fixed that. I placed the content manually. Later I discovered what the reason for the problems. The when I clicked the Downloads folder it appeared empty and said (0) items, the figures button was however selected--when I picked the Pose and materials folders, content was there and worked. I had also tried it in my main runtime and was there too. I usually set up various content folders so they don't get so unwieldy--I wanted to put any Poser 11 related content in the Downloads folder so that I could back it up and rename it if I decide to upgrade to Poser 12 in the future. Do you thick the Downloads Folder isn't a good place to put stuff.

Another question is when I used to use WinZip it placed most content correctly in the target directory, provided the vendor set it up properly. Now it asks if you want to overwrite the runtime folder. I was afraid if I did this it would delete the runtime folder and replace it with the new one--is that what would happen or would it simply merge the folders?

As a personnel thing I don't think it's a good idea to use the downloads folder. It won't matter if you only have 1 version of poser installed, but if you upgrade then each version of poser will expect to see its own downloads folder. As you say you can copy it and change the name but unless you delete all the content from the original folder you will have the content twice, taking up unnecessary disc space. But everybody has their own prefs as to how to organise their runtimes, so whatever suits you.

Tomsde ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2018 at 12:09 PM

I've unfortunately installed certain content that the vendors insisted had to be in other versions of Poser's main runtime. So I had installed a lot of stuff to both Poser 7 and Pro 2012's runtimes. The content still works fine and so that was bull. So I have a lot of redundant models because it would be difficult to track down all that content and reinstall it. I thought of I put Poser Pro 11s extra content in that Downloads then I could just move offer that folder with a new name. So thou think I'd be better off just creating a new library for this stuff instead? I specifically mean content for Paul. I don't want to keep taking up all that disk space unnecessarily.

That's what I've done, I have a runtime for Paul and Pauline, another for Dawn and Dusk, one for Michael 4, one for Victoria 4 etc, plus some for particular genre's and projects, where I save customised and clothed figures so I can load them quickly into scenes for ongoing stories.
