At what stage of check-out does a coupon code take effect ?

I've never used a coupon before, cannot find an FAQ.

I have ~ $80 products in basket, including some on sale, so 'coupons do not apply' to those.

I put in my 50 % coupon code, clicked apply, and the total price is unchanged...

In fact, there is no indication that coupon code applies or is even valid.

( A reward points voucher is immediate, no problems there.)

Help ! What do I do ??

This would help your customers from this side of Atlantic, as my attempt to use 50 % coupon within minutes of receipt of e-mail was refused.

Okay, I'll try again tomorrow, but silly, silly, silly...

A thought: If I also have sale items flagged 'Coupon does not apply' in basket, do they block 50 % coupon from applying to the other items ?? That would be silly, too...
