In general, give samples/bounces for effects you're using, and don't waste samples/bounces for effects you're not using.
If you have glass with thickness in the scene, a ray must be able to hit both sides of the glass, bounce off an object behind, then hit both sides of the glass on the return trip. So, I'd set max bounces and max transparent bounces to 16. That doesn't force sixteen bounces; if the light ray path is completed in five bounces, then that is all that Superfly uses for that ray. If you don't have any volumetric materials in the shot, then no need to waste render time with volume samples or volume bounces.
I generally use progressive refinement, and set the overall samples quite high, then stop the render once it's clean enough.
