I started playing around with an image I did when I first got my Wacom... I will post the original and then the rework...

On the matter of the black dots... as you can see in the rework, when I used the edge filter in GIMP, it makes all the little color differences show up as a bump. The way to get rid of those lines is to not render with any bump maps and turn off shadows. Light and the textures in the background and ground will all turn into those dots.
