Let you in on a secret, Miss B, I'm on a gaming laptop (Dell) with an AMD processor and grahics card (face it it's cheaper than Intel and NVidia) and I am using Blender 2.8, Vue 9 complete, ZBrush and Poser 11 Pro. Soooo. It can be done. Of course I don't know your configuration.
I don't have a GPU at all, but it's not a gaming laptop, and I honestly thought I'd miss the Nvidia card I had on my old laptop, but I don't. My issue with not being able to use Blender 2.8 is, the OpenGL on this laptop is only 3.1.0, and 2.8 requires a higher OpenGL. This puppy is about 7 1/2 years old, so I'm seriously thinking of getting a new laptop, at which time I'll be able to try out 2.8.
That said, however, I've been using Blender for years, starting with version 2.45 (I think), then 2.47 and 2.49. Then I finally got to play with a professional looking/working UI with 2.52, and I've enjoyed the current UI for a long time, so switching to a totally new UI (and new shortcuts, etc.) is going to take a while to get used to. I "do" want to try out the EEVEE render engine, so I will be playing with it when I get the new laptop, but I won't be abandoning 2.79 any time soon.
