Put your cursor over the object. ( i know, duh right?) Right-click. At the top of the menu might be the thing you want to select. Click on it. Otherwise, go to select (the 2nd thing on the menu) there is a list of all items under your cursor. Click on the one you want.

Thanks, but this is fairly cumbersome. Doesn't it seem like clicking on the object/part closest to you should select it, and not something behind it?
