I do work on a desktop...but I keep some palettes floating because I don't have room to dock them. :-D
I keep the animation palette floating, because for some reason I tend to hit it when adjusting parameter dials if it's docked. I don't know how many times I've tried to change a parameter, and suddenly had a looped animation start. That never happens if the palette is floating.
And I keep the hierarchy editor floating, because I like having it up but there's really no space to dock it. So I move to someplace out of the way, and when it's in the way, move it someplace else.
I really should get a second monitor.
