Subject: White Eyes with LaFemme

HKHan99 ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2019 at 11:25 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:17 PM

Okay, somebody mentioned a fix for this somewhere, and I actually wrote it down, but I can't remember it and I can find my note, and I can't find the thread. Sheesh, it sucks to get old. Anyway, LaFemme shows up in the preview renderer with white eyes. I want to use her there because A) fast and B) sketch mode and maybe comic mode. Also, it's hard to make her expressions come out right when I can't see her eyes. How do I make the eyes show? (this time I'm bookmarking AND making a text file AND writing in a notebook!)

Thanks, but no. I don't have 2014, I have 11.2. This problem only occurs with LaFemme, that I know of. Her eyes render okay in firefly, so the materials are there. There's just a white film over her eyes in preview mode.

Which between OpenGL and SreeD display to see if there is any improvement.

It could be one of a couple of things, but in order to know which one it is, a screenshot of the scene in preview mode would help. And which material preset you are using on her would help also. From the sounds of it you MIGHT be using the SSS with Refracted Eyes preset.

This is the original LaFemme (the one with genitals) but the problem is the same with the new one. I don't know how to tell what preset I'm using. I have tried adding in different eyeballs, but without result.

Hopefully this doesn't blow up anybody's screen, I'm on a quad monitor and the snipping tool doesn't seem to offer a way to downsize.

Even though you're using a different version of Poser, one of the solutions in that thread might work for you.

If you have any other La Femme characters, try applying their eyes to La Femme, instead of using the default eyes.

The native cycles node of SuperFly does not preview. In order to get proper refracted lenses you have to use the cycles node so the refracted eye's material is always going to preview like that. It's a limitation of the cycles implementation as SuperFly.

This will happen with any material that uses the native cycles shader root, not just eyes.

On my system, OpenGL:

SreeD:

See if this works rather than messing with the Material Room ATM.

OK. If you are loading the LaFemme character into the scene as is, it is NOT using the SSS with Refracted Eyes shader in that case (that is the one that causes the eyewhites to preview white like that.) The OTHER tipoff that you aren't using the SSS with Refracted Eyes shader is that you can, at least, see a little black pupil in the preview when that shader is used.

For the record, LaFemme loads with the Procedural SSS shaders (you can find three different material sets in the Materials folder ... RPublishing > LaFemme)

This is why this screen shot was helpful in figuring out which one of the two things was causing it. I suspect it's something to do with transparency - either in the material, or in your Firefly preview settings. Because the tear line just above the lower lid is also showing opaque. If you haven't touched the material settings at all you should be able to preview the eyes fine.

So ... we will start by checking your firefly preview settings. Choose Render > Render Settings, and then select the Preview tab. Can you take a screen cap of your preview settings? Here are mine (I'm using a GeForce GTX 1080 in this case)

This works. What other differences can I expect from using SreeD?

My settings are identical to yours. Factory Default, I've never touched them, except for just now trying SreeD.

Apparently Sketch and the Comic Book filters from the little pop up window do not work with SreeD. So I get eyeballs and give up the rest. Also, in SreeD, Cartoon is just a silhouette with grey eyebrows and lashes, and Cartoon With Line simply adds a black outline, including for teeth and so on. Not a very useful solution for me.

randym77 ( ) posted Sat, 05 October 2019 at 5:56 PM

Weird. For me, La Femme does not have white eyes in preview, using either OpenGL or SreeD. Though SreeD looks a lot darker overall.

Maybe updating your graphics card drivers would help? Did La Femme always have white eyes for you, or only since you upgraded?

Always, but somebody told me a fix that had to do with tweaking something on LaFemme, and it worked- until the upgrade, by which time I forgot how to do it. For this reason I don't think it's a driver problem.

Do you have any scene with your tweaked version of La Femme saved, so you could see what it is?

Also, the advanced search here lets you seach by user name, which might help you find the original advice, if you got it here. Maybe this?

Yes, that's it! Thank you! Now bookmarked, screenshotted and saved, and a note taken.

I think some setting got changed when I upgraded, even though it shouldn't have affected my LaFemme Pro, because any scene using her has the same problem. Maybe because I changed locations for the libraries, because no amount of new installs would make Pauline, Paul and Roxy work until I did- conflict with something about the Smith Micro folder, I dunno. Must have lost the connection to that material fix. This should make it right.

Woot! Actually, having messed with it a bit now, I find that all that is necessary is to disconnect the nodes connected to 'alternate diffuse' and change diffuse to black. That one change gets rid of the white for both eyeball and tearline (done to each, that is). Then if you want to render in superfly or firefly, just reconnect the nodes.

I had same with the refracted eyes shader on a 1070GTX. I contacted developers and I understood from them it is an issue with the openGL previewer for SuperFly (Poser uses dedicated OpenGL previewers for SF and FF ) currently not being able to correctly show the nodes that SF needs to do the refracted eyes. Little can be done there. They render correctly but the preview is horrible.

Do you really need the refracted eyes? Render once with this setting and once with the SSS without the refracted eyes. You can then see if the difference is worth the trouble.

I don't need the refracted eyes- I only want to render in Preview. The default eyes are refracted- I don't know which eyes to use that are not. I tried substituting a couple different eyes from the materials catalog but they didn't do anything unless I changed the shader node as above, and then they seem to overlay the existing eyes rather than replace them. Maybe I'm just using the wrong one- I think I tried the procedural sss and simple pbr, but didn't bother with the ones that say 'refracted' in the title. I also tried the ones from the Lexi morph, they seem to work better.

Then you are facing a different problem than I had. I just had the issue with La Femme when I used the 'SSS with refracted eyes' material from the library in combinatio with the preview render set for SuperFly. It disappeared when I selected the FireFly preview.

I don't seem to have two different previews. Just a preview mode. When I add the SSS with refracted eyes material, it shows up black with a white dot in the middle. I can't seem to make that go away with the same tricks that work on the normal eyes.

I think it has changed since I saw& discussed the issue.

There may also be a difference per video card and space available.
