That contains the metadata files for the installed content, which can be read by th reimport metadata command to create the database entries but are not needed during regular use. It's also where DS writes exported user data. For both, you go to the Content Library pane option menu (the lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab) and select Content DB Maintenance. It's also where product files are written in you create or edit a product.
