As far as your render being gray, It's most likely there is something between the camera and the scene. If "remove backfacing polys" is turned is checked, you may not see it if you are outside something like the construct (called ground in the scene) To check that go to render>rendersettings preview tab, on the right under style options si where you find it. Uncheck that and see if something shows up.
We haven't heard what's coming in poser 12. Yes, superfly is cycles (or similar) It does subsurface scattering well. Reflections and lighting work well. There is no micro-polygon displacement so displacement only works if it follows the faces of the mesh. Some people have gotten photoreal or close to it. But it takes work. Most shaders need to be updated to look good in Superfly, and older light sets don't work well. There are free and pay shaders as well as scripts to help out. And if you're at all familiar with blender, there are shaders online you can copy (rebuild in poser) though there are a few nodes that are missing.
