what I did with this is use a mix of SSS and diffuse with my free shader. Not sure if SSS would work with all lampshade models or if it would look any good with the light off lit externally. Also, the point light is set to inverse square and I have 6 diffuse bounces set in the render settings so the light gets around. You'll want walls for the light to bounce around on. It looks good that way but is a bit noisy.
