Subject: Lamp shade material?

gmm2 ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2020 at 2:09 PM ยท edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 10:53 PM

I'm making a lamp prop that I intend to be as functional as possible. That is, it'll have a working switch to turn on or off a specific point light located where the bulb would be. As part of this, I'd like for the shade of the lamp to have a proper translucent material that reacts appropriately to that point light (and ideally, also to only an ambient material light). The problem is I can't figure out or find how to do that sort of translucency properly. Any tips?

what I did with this is use a mix of SSS and diffuse with my free shader. Not sure if SSS would work with all lampshade models or if it would look any good with the light off lit externally. Also, the point light is set to inverse square and I have 6 diffuse bounces set in the render settings so the light gets around. You'll want walls for the light to bounce around on. It looks good that way but is a bit noisy. lampand chair.jpg

Thank you so much! That looks like exactly what I'm after.

Well, it's not working for me. I can get, at best, some light on the edges of whatever the light's behind, which is the exact opposite of how it should look.

There's an extensive thread on translucent shaders in the old SM thread here https://forum.smithmicro.com/topic/1580/we-need-a-hair-shader-like-this-for-poser-shader-gurus/112

I'm going to repost the findings in case that site is lost.

PAY ATTENTION - SCATTER ONLY WORKS WITH A VOLUME, NEVER WITH A SINGLE SIDED POLYGON.

For SuperFly image.png

Thank you so much for all this info! I tried this out and it's doing what I want, even with ambient lights. I'll have to mess around with it more to get it looking just how I want, but this is a big help.

Thanks to structure as well; I may try combining these two methods.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Sat, 25 April 2020 at 1:06 PM

Structure's setup seems to work exactly the same. But only for SuperFly.

Online Now!

@bagginsbill

This may be a dumb question, but is that diffuse node attached to the translucence in your first post (with an image) actually doing anything? I thought those dashed lines meant that node wasn't working with the node it was plugged in with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Consider me insane if you wish, but is your reality any better?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Sun, 26 April 2020 at 6:41 AM

The dashes DO mean that but only for SuperFly. For FireFly if you do not place a Diffuse at that position then the Translucence just glows no matter what.

As was already shown by Structure, if you're using the old Poser Surface root node but for SuperFly, you must NOT plug in a lighting node there. For FireFly you MUST plug in a lighting node precisely as I showed.
