I learned how to model firstt in Blender, then learned how to do the short cuts. Thing is, I'm so comfortable not using them.

I have to get myself comfortable with it, too. I think I need to put away all my toys and concentrate on it solely until I get it. I just have to find the discipline to do that.

Try modeling relatively simple stuff first and just play with it. Then add to it. Most of the shortcuts I know, I found by doing research on how to model particular items. Your knowledge will grow from that point the more you use it.
