Here are some samples I did with varying volume density. They're kind of dark because I had the render settings low.

here is no atmosphere

keep in mind these are far from the camera. How fast something disappears will be determined by that. The ball is 13ft from the camera, the cylinder is 48ft, the steps are 75 ft and the pyramid is 103ft each at the closest edge.
