Well I still use 2.79 as well as the newer version except for version going back to 2.49 and 2.5 those I might consider defunct but I still run copies on my system from current to 2.49 just to have to ability to replicate issues member's might have and that I think is one of Blenders strongest attributes unlike so many other software's that overwrite previous installed versions you can have numerous version of Blender running and have the ability to fall back to a more familiar version if you run into problems or just need the comfort of having an old version to fall back on if having trouble learning the new one
WELL SAID!!! I couldn't have said it better. Versions 2.8 and 2.9 came out fast, and unlike a lot of other software, which take their time in upgrading to newer versions, I find that too fast. I also would prefer to have 2.79 installed for as long as it'll work on my computer, so I can create something in it, and one of the newer versions, for comparison. That way I can know if the newer versions are creating what I need as well as I can create in 2.79. Being comfortable with a certain version of software, doesn't make it "defunct" or "unusable" just because a newer version (or 2) have come out in a very short period of time.
Unlike Lobo, I don't have my old 2.4x, 2.5x or 2.6x versions installed, because it's been a very long time since they were introduced, but 2.8x is only 1 update higher, which doesn't make 2.79 unusable by any stretch of the imagination. I'll get to the newer versions . . . eventually. I'm just not in any need to rush into it.
