That shows that hardware shading supports scaling of texture maps, whereas without hardware shading the preview shows the texture map at 100% size regardless of the settings in the shader. Presumably that's for a PoserSurface or PhysicalSurface though, if it was a Cycles surface it would just be white which is also pretty different.
