Subject: Using Poser to make a BJD

infinity10 ( ) posted Thu, 05 August 2021 at 5:22 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 3:43 AM

Your neigbourhood BJD person is back with another home-cooked doll. I want to show how I used Poser to complete the creation of a pose-able Ball Jointed Doll (it is not 100 per cent real !).

First I show you the results:

Yes, you are correct ! This is a pose-able hierarchy of parented props.

I generated a BJD using Terawell Design Doll software.

Then I imported the OBJ (Design Doll only exports OBJ at this time) into Shade3D software in order to re-oreganise the geometry into actual dall parts. (You can probably do this with Blender3D as well, but I am more familiar with the with the process in Shade3D).

I leave the re-organised Doll geometry as parts as I export the entire group. This is important because later, when I import into Poser, I get only one mesh but the groupings are all done.

I proceed to change the Joint Parameter settings and adjusting x,y,z translations as I need to. Working with front, side, top and back cameras is recommended.

I find it easier to take screen captures of my adjustments made for upper and lower limbs of one side of the Doll, then using these images to apply the settings to the limbs on the other side of the Doll. Of course, the x values will be inverted (ie, 0.001 becomes =0.001 for example)

I test the rotations of the parts and fine-tune accordingly. Some parts - for example the head and the Feet - need minor translation adjustments when posed, but these are not a big deal.

I also locked some rotations to prevent un-natural poses for the limbs.

The key point is to make the Joint Parameter Centre and End Points coincident (i.e. sharing the same values).

Here is an example to show what I mean:

Hope this thread has been helpful in showing how Poser 12 is actually quite a fun and useful software.

I could also generate different hand props in different poses... Good to have that Design Doll software to work with Poser.

Thank you for showing your workflow, duly book-marked.

Up to now, DaD's "Box Man" was my limit, on a good day...

Uhm... It's just a fun project which anyone can whip up using Design Doll, Blender (or Shade3D as in my case) and Poser.
