Picturenaut 3.2 can resave HDR to EXR.  The software is free and can be useful for manipulating HDRs.

Well, I downloaded that earlier this year, but never checked it out.  Now I'm definitely going to have to give it a whirl.  Thanks @hborre for the tip.
