The tangent space approach looks good, but I need to figure out the exact rules for the second and third coordinates. I'm going to have to do science to it (see illustration, curtesy of Dresden Codak), unless I can find a volunteer oracle, i.e. someone who knows the actual implementation and will tell me what it does.
