If the calf with thigh intersections are troublesome with SSS, they might still remain glowy troublesome a bit even with just proximity. Just a thought...
The Poser 12 PBSDF has an SSS setting that fixes the glowing problem, but one still gets blue seams when bits in the same scatter group intersect. There's still sometimes proximity glow, but as far as I've seen that's not related to SSS and usually can be alleviated by reducing the number of diffuse bounces.
I watched a talk from the Blender conference the other day about a successor to the PBDSF that's in the works, in which it was mentioned explicitly that the existing PBDSF has a problem with energy conservation, which would explain some of the glow issues. The new version will be written with the goal to always conserve energy.
