I see your point, I'm just very uncomfortable with very high Surface values where environmental lighting is concerned.  Low-resolution HDRI appears to complicate the SSS response through the skin creating Fireflies during Superfly rendering.  Only by modifying the illumination values of the HDR image or using high-resolution images have I solved my particular issues.
