Maybe I was too hasty to say that no one uses it anymore.  I did go back and visited Cyclorama and rendered this image using additional props, a combination of actual lighting and HDRI, and a few props I changed the materials to.  

Overall, not bad with a plate background.  Just a few more tweaks and a shallower depth of field and I'll think it's ready for the gallery.
