Just out of curiousity, does this create footprints or tracks in the snow? Or is their some trick to making them?

To make tracks in snow, you would have to create a footprint masking element within the mat and add light ( top ) and dark ( bottom ). It can be done but not the way it is out of the box. 

BTW, it works in P11. I just tested it. And it works!
