Subsurface Scatter will determine the translucent appearance that you are trying to achieve.  The measurable distance should be increased, but too high a value will increase the luminance of the skin texture, making it appear unrealistically waxy.  Transmittance color and SSS color will need to be adjusted as well.

Aye. I have worked with it to try and get that particular translucence that pale skin has. Think of the peaches and cream, ginger-red head tone.
not a "painted vampire" skin. Not a "geisha white make up" skin. But that look of pale human flesh.

The one that has a faint, often blotchiness to it. A subtle luminance.
