Thanks, Jamball77--checking those other options in the export dialog did the trick. Funny, I couldn't find any useful info on those in the manual. Aleks- The Export as Morph Object checkbox should export the mesh without altering the coordinates. I've exported body parts lots of times into Max and messed with them, then reimported them as Morph targets without problems. If you're using Max, there's a good tutorial here:
