A dxf that gets exported in layers is a model that lets you select various parts, each part being a 'layer'. Bryce will import a layered dxf and show it as a 'group'. You can then ungroup and texture each layer individually, rather than just having one texture for the entire model. If you're going to work with dxf's you might want a freeware modeler called Metasequoia. http://www1.sphere.ne.jp/mizno/main_e.html It has a tool that lets you smooth the mesh (which is great for those low quality freebies), and a tool that unifies the faces, fixes overlapped faces, etc. Its also got a great metaball section.
