I think it's great that this incident has taught many of us that we can extract self-installers to a blank folder of our choice.. and then treat the files as we would any zip. We've also learned easy ways to delete the program entries we don't like ( still best to remove the entire program first, if that is your intention) This knowledge will serve us well in the future, with other software. Armed with this information, the issue of 'zip vs. self-extractor' is less significant, because we can now easily manipulate the situation, instead of the other way around. Thanks all
