Maybe you are applying the texture just to the skin? Go to materials under the Render menu, and make sure you have checked the little box that says "Texture changes apply to entire figure." If I understood correctly everything but the face shows up on your figure,right? Of course, don't expect the facial features to be the same but the colours, shadows, etc. should show. Also, make sure you have everything on your figure set to white if you want the exact colours from the texture to show.
