Subject: Bug in Shadows in Bryce 5 or is it me?

I've had this twice now, where the light seems to go through Poser or obj files where it isn't supposed to, despite the Cast Shadows and Infinite light settings. For instance, if I put a light in a box and put something around that box, then the light shines on the outside object, even though it is enclosed and non-transparent. I can't seem to get Bryce to properly do the shadows.

"Magic Lesson" (the URL) is a good example of what I am talking about. On the chair, the glow from the fire which is a spotlight out of the chimney, shines on the entire chair even though Michael is clearly in the way. It was even worse before. Also, the girl has a shadow, but the dog doesn't seem like it does from that same light. Neither does the bottom of the chair.

In a new pic, the light inside the house, meant to just shine through the windows, goes through the roof, other rooms, etc.

Is there something I am missing or is there truly a bug in Bryce 5's renderer? I've had several comments that the shadows were wrong and I agree, but all attempts to fix it have failed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you do have a shadow from the chair off the light in the fireplace. Its slight, but it is there. Insofar as the back of the chair not having any shadow from Michael, my bet is that its because the chair back is being hit by a stronger light from the fireplace, and the ambient settings in the chairs texture are precluding the Michael shadow from registering. Perhaps going into the sky lab and adjusting the shadow density and altering the ambient colour to black or dark grey would help? But it looks like theres a third light source somewhere we cant see. Theres something in the way the light hits the chair arm and also bounces off the dog that makes me wonder if theres something else at play here. Ill grant you, the dog is a mystery, and Id recheck the settings for its ability to cast shadows.

Ah, that may just be what I am experiencing. Ambient light being set to high on the textures. I didn't realize that these can drown out the shadowing. I will check into that and see if that is the problem. Thanks. Will post here when I find out...

Shadow, select your lights seperatley, then in the light Lab set your lights to Ranged on the falloff, then you can adjust out how far you want the light falloff to go out from the source light.

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

I found out most of my issues. Thanks to all. The ambient shadow setting has to be turned up or there is no shadows hardly at all. Something I didn't understand from the above, until I separated the figure and a light source by itself and wondered why there was no shadow. I wrongfully thought if there was no ambient lighting via the sun (the sun turned off), that the ambient shadows should be turned off as well. As to the dog, it was a placement issue. He was twisted a little bit in his pose and light from the fireplace was getting in underneath him. So that is why he seems to have no shadow. He probably does, but it's off screen. I appreciate your suggestions and I need to spend more time with the lighting options I guess. :)
