Yes they can, just copy the Poser PP2 and library thumbnail PNG file to the Avatar Labruntimeprops folder. Extra body parts may be added in a similar fashion. You may like to see how I did it by reading http://www.philc.net/avatarTutorial3.htm Curious labs also has information on this on their site.
