I've never had very good luck with making 100% photorealistic textures... my last one was a combination of photorealistic and hand painted. I have the best luck with hand painted, though hand painted textures aren't what most people want these days... I personally prefer them for the type of imagery I make... I know a lot of people have said that Cake1's tutorial is one of the better ones out there... and it's actually the only one on making a photorealistic texture that I know of off the top of my head.
