Impudicus and Poser speak with sound knowledge. The little dots are Poser's way of representing transparency in the Preview mode. Go to Render/Materials, and have a look at the options there. You'll see there are sliders for transparency. If you move the transparency for the hair (there is a pull-down menu at the top left to select which model in your scene you're working with; the right-hand pull-down men at the top selects materials associated with that model) all the way down to zero, it'll show up in preview like another model but it won't render like one. Traveler's Cartoon view, as elaborated here by Poser, is one way of previewing hair, but I acually tend to turn the transparency down to zero if I'm working with the hair (say, fitting it to a model it doesn't normally fit, or using morph targets that come with the hair). I find that this gives me more of a fine view of the model than the Cartoon style can. Then I turn the transparency up again to render.
