Subject: Is there a way to set up more folders that work as "Props" or similar?

Sentenza ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2002 at 4:37 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 11:11 PM

Can you persuade Poser to accept more folders than the standard "Characters", "Pose", "Props" or similar?
For I've got so many models, props and poses (countless subfolders, "Runtime" size all in all approx. 8 GB)I want to split for example the "Characters" folder in three, say "Clothing", "Characters" and "Objects".

Does anyone know the hint? Do I have to get into the registry or is there a poser file which I can manipulate that way?

Thanks,
LeeJ

I dont think its possible, Lee.

Kiera ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2002 at 4:50 PM

Yeah. It isn't possible. Which is why I hope Poser 5 will have a better user interface. I like being able to move the interface around a la KPT, but I HATE HATE HATE the structures for managing gigantic Pose, Prop, and Figure libraries. I would rather have an explorer like folder interface for that stuff.

I broke my up by sub folders, like in the Character area, I arranged them by artist, the one who made the model, that way I will always remember who did it, also the readme file helped me learn that. Don't think you can do it any other way. Unless you change the cr2 file so it knows where to point to the new files. Sharen

Something that REALLY helps in the Poses directory is to do a "fake" sort by type of file. I have mine split out like this: CHAR-charname MAT-itemname POSE-P4W-name POSE-Vicki-name and so on. That way if I am looking for a MAT, i just scroll to the MAT section. I do similar things in the Props directory.. ARMOR-Vicki ARMOR-Mike JEWELRY-Vicki JEWELRY-Mike

A great tip I only recently learned is to move MAT files to the camera library. Just change the .pz2 extensions to .cr2 and they work just fine. Its really helping clean up my overloaded pose library, and now I can find the mats I want to use much faster.

what a great idea, boy I have alot of work to do. Sharen

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2002 at 6:26 PM

You know what gets me, is especially the Pose files, because you can really accumulate ALOT of them especially if you do like I do and save poses that may only affect one arm or something like that. And also, my "people" are not all similar to each other so they all require their own Pose library, diue to diffeing body sizes, morph targets, etc. I have a few Pose library subfolders with well over 50 poses saved and am adding to them all the time. They take a LONG time to open up, because I guess Poser has to feed all the thumbnails into memory each time you open a library.

scifiguy: It's .cM2, not .cr2. The Camera Library looks for cm2 extensions. Sharen: It's not a lot of work if you know how. I did all my mat poses (500+) the other day and it took about 15 minutes. This is because, with the DOS *ren* command, you can do entire directories at once instead of one file at a time. See the link, it explains it and also contains a utility you can use if you don't like DOS.

Wow... although my slice of the /Runtime/libraries/Poses directory is rather siezable, I usually keep only the subdirectories of poses that I need in there, loading and unloading them before starting Poser (one of these days, a perl script would do wonders for making this part easier...) These directories are a big clue to what they contain (I rename 'em that way if needed), and I move 'em in and out of /Poser4/Runtime/libraries as needed before I fire Poser up (otherwise they sit in poser_stuff/poses/cold_storage outside of the Poser directory.) HTH a little, though I admit that it can be burdensome if you don't know exactly what the pose set contains... I use descriptive directory names and a .txt file in case I'm not sure. /P

Thanks, scifiguy and Jackson...that will be a huge help. I have 14 MAT pose sub-directories.

You're welcome.

I'm working on an app which should be of use in solving this little problem with Poser4. "Poser Booost" is the unoficial early name for this application which will be integrated into the Poser interface. It will give additional control over categorising the libraries and selecting between them without having to do the file-jiggling and re-starting of Poser. It will bring an end to all problems with the intricacies of the Poser library browser. Hopefully. Anyone eager to Beta-test this app, please bear with us. It will be a while yet. Please note... SORRY SORRY SORRY PC only. or... any ideas on porting Delphi to MAC?

hi - the only thing i found out, is: you can move your library with pp2 files to another directory/partition/harddrive and use the import command (import poser 3 pp2's). it works well with geometries embedded in the pp2 file. drawback is: you have no rsr preview pics, but you can organize the folders to your taste. hope this helps :)

Mason ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 11:37 AM

You can also use subdirectories inside a particular library directory. For example, my props directory has a vehicles dir. Under that I have a cars, trucks, airplanes, spaceships set of sub dirs. Poser will show all the contents of all subdirs as though they are in a single directory when I look at the vehicles dir. This allows me to keep the meshes and textures in seperate directories. Its also great for backups.

JeffH ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 11:58 AM

Mason, Are you using the Pro Pack? I don't think subdirectories work in Poser4.

bloodsong ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 3:52 PM

heyas; i thought the sub-sub directories worked in poser 4, but NOT in pro pack.

JeffH ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 3:56 PM

I've never gotten that to work on either. I get errors when I click the library file.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2002 at 4:48 PM

hogwarden: If it isn't too late yet in the coding process, please consider adding a search function to "Poser Booost", if you haven't already done so.
