I think we are all thinking of different definitions for making hair like the above. When I model hair, I tend more to model large locks/clumps, each individually, with a high enough resolution that they have smooth curves, and also can take morphs, etc. Now if one just wished to map some curly texture onto a low resolution one trick horse hair, meaning it won't move alot, cannot take alot of fancy morphs, and the ones it does have tend to possibly distort it and it's map, sure one could probably do hair that is a faked curly hair. And alot of what I am saying is also based on theory too, since I have been giving alot of thought to exactly how to do good versatile curly hair for an upcoming edition of UltraSalon in the future... and the pitfalls of trying it, the areas I need to spend R&D in, etc.
